KEIN support

Since ten years KEIN.ORG is offering a wide range of free services for all sorts of online collaborations. KEIN support is designed to meet the needs of freelancing artists and activists, small non-profit institutions, temporary or ad hoc networking initiatives. It is also the basis for a wide range of projects we have initiated, designed, and set up in various institutional or non-institutional contexts. All software on server side is open source and/or free software. The servers are administrated by groups of experienced sysadmins who are networking on a volunteer basis.

The array of services includes chat servers (silc and jabber), several mail servers with different configurations, webmail services, domain name hosting, dozens of wiki webs, PHP based content management systems, lively research and development of open source multimedia solutions as well as large-scale database and information retrieval projects.

One of our most popular services is KEIN mail, a free, secure IMAP/POP3 email account with practically unlimited storage capacity. KEIN mail is based on postfix and cyrus a robust and scalable mail server which has been developed at Carnegie Mellon and which is today used in a lot of universities. KEIN mail uses many ways of filtering out spam and virus, currently there is amavisd-new as well as spamassassin and clam anti virus running. KEIN users can check their email using a mail client or one of the various KEIN webmail interfaces.

Besides individual email accounts KEIN.ORG runs various installations of the mailman mailing list manager. KEIN is servicing hundreds of mailing lists ranging from small-scale, private, ad-hoc networking lists or project based newsletters to huge public discussion lists with several thousands of subscribers.

Web hosting is certainly the most extensive field of KEIN support. Hundreds of artist and activist run initiatives set up their web sites and online presences on one of our ten apache http servers. When it comes to more advanced and complex projects we recommend our users to start their own content management system in the framework of the various drupal farms. These multi-site installations of the most powerful and popular open source CMS run on a single code base that is constantly updated and secured against bugs and exploits.

In addition to these core services of KEIN support we are offering a variety of more specific networking tools, such as the open and decentralized identity system Open ID, the open instant messaging tool Jabber, the secure internet live conferencing protocol SILC just to name a few...
